Our round Cabochon Mandrels come in 9 diameters, from ½" to 1", by 1/16" increments. They feature a thicker 5/32" handle for more a comfortable grip and your choice of a 9" (23cm) or 12" (30cm) length. For regular bead mandrels, where you mostly hold the mandrel level, the 12" length is more popular. Cabochon mandrels are typically used more in an up and down direction, therefor you might prefer the 9" length so it doesn't bump the table and other objects.

The Elena Tucker Bobbin Mandrel is the perfect tool for securely holding metal bobbins without the need of mandrel release. Make hollow beads much easier than the old fashioned way, using these stainless steel tube mandrels with a small blow hole on their side. The Puffy Mandrels are 12" long and have a small hole drilled in their side near one end of the tube. Dip the end of the Puffy Mandrel, that has the side blow hole, in mandrel release, well past the side hole, as you would a regular mandrel. Place your finger over the dipped end of the mandrel and gently blow through the other end to clear out the mandrel release from the side blow hole, leaving the dipped end of the mandrel tube plugged. As with the traditional way of making hollow beads, start by creating two disks of glass on either side of the side blow hole. After the symmetrical disks are formed, bring their edges together using a graphite paddle. A Kim Cone and Vessel Shaper does this operation much easier. Now is where the Puffy Mandrel shows its stuff. Heat the glass to be pliable and gently blow thorough the cool end of the mandrel to form the shape. The 5/32", 3/16" and 1/4" Hollow Bead Mandrels are welded sealed at the end where the hollow bead is formed. Puffy Mandrels are a little delicate. The 5/32", 3/16" and 1/4" Hollow Bead Mandrels are made from our Heavy Wall Stainless Steel Tubing and are very durable.

12" length ..... $13.00  Part# MANVARIETY-12

Stainless steel rods used to make beads on. 1/8" (large size) and smaller are packaged and priced per dozen. 5/32" and 3/16" are per half dozen. The 1/4" size is per three. The most popular diameter is 3/32" followed by 1/16" then 1/8". Choose from a 9" length or the more popular length of 12". 12" is especially popular in the larger diameters, because often a large mandrel is used for larger glass items with a larger flame. Longer mandrels are also easier to place into an annealer. The Variety Packs contains 2 each of five sizes of mandrels: 1/16", 3/32" 1/8", 5/32" and 3/16". It does NOT contain .035", .045" and 1/4".

Beau Anderson Tungsten Mandrels
1/16" ..... $10.00  Part# MAN-TUNG116
3/32" ..... $10.00  Part# MAN-TUNG332
1/8" ..... $10.00  Part# MAN-TUNG18

Revolutionary, no mandrel release required. Tungsten has long been used to rake and poke holes in glass, because of its ability to resist sticking to molten glass. However, get tungsten and glass hot enough and they do stick together. Apply heat properly to the tungsten and it releases. That is the basis by which Tungsten Mandrels are used.

We welded, end on end, a 3" section of tungsten to a 9" section of 1/8" stainless steel. The stainless stays cool to the touch, as a regular mandrel does. Tungsten conducts heat very well, so it cannot be held directly. Make your bead directly onto the tungsten area of the mandrel, without mandrel release. When the bead is completed, apply the flame directly to the mandrel, right next to the bead. If the tungsten fumes, back off the heat a little. The now red glowing tungsten is ready to separate from the glass bead. The most common way to control this separation is to attach a small glass punty to the bead and gently counter rotate the bead to the mandrel while the mandrel looses its red heat. The bead is now free to move about the mandrel. Now remove the punty and slide the bead into the annealer or fiber blanket. One mandrel of a size is all you need to continuously make beads. The tip of the tungsten is sharpened to a point. As is the nature of tungsten, handle it carefully. It does not bent, but rather can snap.

1/16", 3/32" and 1/8" Tungsten Mandrels make smaller diameter bead holes than mandrels coated in mandrel release. Use Instructions.

Long 1-1/2" ..... $25.00  Part# MANBIG112-L

Used to make large holes in glass beads, rings, sculpture or for core formed vessels. A large diameter stainless rod, 2" long with a 5/32" diameter (slightly larger than 1/8") mandrel attached as a handle. The total length is 12". The three smallest sizes, 3/16", 1/4" and 5/16", have an 1/8" handle. The Long 1-1/2" size head is 3" long and it has a ¼" handle that is 18" long. The handle is thin enough to make quicker rotations and marvering easier than if the whole tool was the same diameter as you would have if you were to use tubing, yet thick enough to make it hard to bend. Also, unlike tubing, you do not need to worry about moisture getting trapped in the handle and burning you. The large diameter stainless rod is cored out, on all but the 5/16" size, 7/8 of its 2" length to make it lighter. The end of the large diameter rod is solid so that the cored out area does not fill up when it dipped in mandrel release.

A tapered stainless steel cone is attached to an 1/8" mandrel, 12" long. The point of the cone begins about ½" from the end of the mandrel. The overall length of the cone is about 1-5/8". The wide end of the cone comes in five diameters, thereby giving you five angles to choose from. Pictured are the 1/2", 3/4" and 1" sizes.

Trimlett Two Hole Button Mandrel
1/16" ..... $5.50  Part# MANTRIM116
3/32" ..... $5.50  Part# MANTRIM332

Used to make two hole buttons and beads. This tool is shaped like a tuning fork. The end of the stainless steel mandrel that the button or bead is made on is a mandrel bent like a hair pin with a length of about 1½". The curve of the bend is welded to a stainless steel 1/8" X 9" mandrel as a handle. The 1/16" size has 1/16" tines spaced about 3/16" (5mm) apart and the 3/32" size has 3/32" tines spaced about 1/4" (6mm) apart. The distance between the two tines can be adjusted, using small pliers, to suit your application. Use with mandrel release, as you would with a regular mandrel. Button mandrels, with their two parallel rods, are a little harder to remove from the glass piece, because they have to be wiggled free instead of rotated free as you would do with a single rod bead mandrel. Also, the thinner 1/16" size is more susceptible to bending while removing the button, but easily straightened out with small pliers.

Smircich Tail Stock Holder
$8.50  Part# SMIR-TSH

Designed by Jim Smircich to make those technically perfect beads he is famous for. It is a wooden contoured handle that holds a brass rod with a cup shape near its end. Place the tip of the mandrel into the cup to steady it. By holding the tail stock holder in one hand and the mandrel in the other, you can control the bead within the flame more easily. It becomes instantly more stationary as you rotate the mandrel allowing you to place the bead in the flame exactly where you need it and keep the bead on center.

Mandrel Pin Vise
$22.95  Part# VISEMAN

he miniature three jawed chuck, similar to that on a drill, goes from completely closed up to 1/8" (3mm) in diameter to hold mandrels, tungsten rods and wires. Extremely useful when you find that holding thin mandrels is difficult, tungsten gets too hot to touch and wires are floppy and too hot to hold close to the glass. Simply remove the mandrel, tungsten or wire from the handle and insert a new one. The handle is completely hollow all the way through, so there is no limit to the length of the item you are holding. Handle is slightly under 3/8" (8mm) diameter. 6½" (15cm) overall length.
