What is Dichroic Dichroic is the common name for dichromatic, meaning two colors. Dichroic coating can show two colors. One color is the transmitted color. The color you will see when you look through the coating. The other color is the reflected color. For example, the color Blue / Gold, will show blue when you look straight through a clear glass with that coating. When you look at the reflection of the coated glass, straight on, the color will be gold. If the coated glass is opaque, such as black, you will only see the reflected color. However, the name will still be Blue / Gold (transmitted color / reflected color). A color that has only one name, is the reflected name. The transmitted color will either be the same or so close that it doesn't matter. Viewing a color other than straight on to the class will show a color "shift". Because of the highly technical nature of applying dichroic color to glass, slight color variations, from sheet to sheet, should be expected. Also, colors can shift after the glass is fired. Some colors always shift to some degree, others never change. The texture of the color also changes after firing.

The price of every dichroic coated glass is determined by six factors.
- The color of the coating. Colors called Standard and Specialty are priced alike, and are less expensive than Premium colors.
- Colors that have a Pattern applied to them have an added charge. A few Patterned colors do not appear to have patterns, but reveal a pattern or special effect, after firing.
- Difference in the cost of the different available glasses the dichroic coating is applied to, affects the cost.
- Size of the sheet that is coated. Most dichroic coated sheets are 19" or 20" in diameter. However, some sheet glass is is only available as a rectangle that is only 17" (approximately) in one direction. The circle that is cut from these sheets will have less total area, yet the dichroic coated sheet cost may be the same as if it were coated on a different glass that is larger.
- Size of the dichroic glass ordered. Everything less than a full sheet of unfired dichroic glass will cost more per square area than the full sheet.
- Value added. If the dichroic glass has a third party design etched into it, or if the glass has been cut into strips and kiln fired, the cost will be higher. Kiln fired strips are sold by the weight, because once they are fired, its size changes such that is becomes necessary to then charge by weight.

About fused strips and rods for lampworking Kiln fired strips: Dichroic coated kiln fired strips for lampworking are available in stocked widths of 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 1". Other widths are available by special order. 1/4" is the most popular width, and the width that we will give you if you do not specify otherwise. Because fused strips are cut from round sheets, the lengths will vary. Most lengths are 17". Some are shorter. For purposes of ordering, we consider a standard length at 17".
Kiln Fired Strips are sold by the ounce. A 1/4" wide strip weighs between 1/2 and 1 ounce, depending upon which glass the dichroic is coated on. Listed width is before firing. Actual width varies slightly.
Kiln fired dichroic coated glass strips provide several important benefits for lampworking over rods or plain cut strips.
- Kiln firing greatly increases the coating strength to better survive the harsh effects of the flame.
- Kiln firing "shifts" the color and surface texture to what the flame will do. This allows you to see the true look of the dichroic glass before you use it.
- The kiln fir strips have an even dichroic coating across the entire width that extends around the sides. Rods do not.
- Fusing rounds off the four long sharp edges that would otherwise cause scum by forming micro bubbles.
- Kiln firing rounds off the sharp cut edges, making the glass safer and easier to handle.
- The textures, such as ripple, when kiln fired flat, create an interesting and desirable pattern in the coating, that is not reproducible with any other method. This gives you more design options at the torch.
Rods: Dichroic coated rods are coated on one side, down their length with the crest having the most intense color. Rods are approximately 18" long with a dichroic coating of 15" to 17". Because of the subtle look of dichroic coated rods, only the darkest color coatings are used.

About sheet and cut strips for fusing Sheets: Most dichroic coated sheets are circles, 19" or 20" in diameter. However, some sheet glass is is only available as a rectangle that is only 17" (approximately) in one direction. The 19" to 20" circle that is cut from these sheets will have less total area, yet the dichroic coated sheet cost may be the same as if it were coated on a different glass that is larger. All sheets always have small non coated areas caused by the clamping systems of the coating process.
Cut strips: Dichroic coated cut strips, intended for use in stained glass fusing, have the dichroic coating cover the entire width and are not fused. Cut strips are available in 1" or wider widths by usually 17" long. Most lengths are 17". Some are shorter. For purposes of ordering, we consider a standard length at 17". Priced by the square inch.

What are the different glasses available? The following glass choices are available: Effetre (Moretti) - COE is 104 - about 2 mm thick - Clear or Black A smooth surface glass. We also coat several colors or Effetre sheet glass (about 3 mm thick). For dichroic coated colored glass, call for availability. 1(800) 899-0689
U 104 Thin - COE is 104 - about 1.6 mm thick - Clear or Black Like all the U 104 glasses, this smooth surface glass is made especially for us, since 2002, and is what we sell the most of, by far, in any 104 COE.
U 104 Lintecular - COE is 104 - about 2 mm thick - Clear or Black A textured glass similar to corduroy. The texture causes the dichroic to coat in a varying color pattern, that when kiln fired to flat, retains that pattern.
U 104 Ripple - COE is 104 - about 4 mm thick - Clear or Black A glass with a ripple texture that is wider and taller than that of Bullseye Ripple. The texture causes the dichroic to coat in a varying color pattern, that when kiln fired to flat, retains that pattern.
Bullseye 90 Thin - COE is 90 - about 2 mm thick - Clear or Black A smooth surface glass. We also coat several colors or Bullseye 90 Thin sheet glass. For dichroic coated colored glass, call for availability. 1(800) 899-0689
Bullseye 90 Ripple - COE is 104 - about 4 mm thick - Clear or Black A glass with a ripple texture that is narrower and shorter than that of U 104 Ripple. The texture causes the dichroic to coat in a varying color pattern, that when kiln fired to flat, retains that pattern.
Borofloat 33 - COE is 33 - available in .075", .125" (1/8") and .250" (1/4") - Clear only A smooth surface glass available in three thickness'.

Rainbow 2 PLUS Rainbow 2 Plus is more durable than Rainbow 2 and can handle the abuse of high heat without crazing. Prior to hotworking, the Rainbow 2 PLUS on clear glass looks darker than normal, but then brightens when fired. On black glass there is no evident change in color.
